Sub-Affiliate

An affiliate recruited by another affiliate (sometimes called a two-tier or multi-level affiliate structure). The original affiliate earns a small override commission on the sub-affiliate's referrals.

Sub-Affiliate Programs and Tiers

Sub-affiliates (also called tiered affiliates) are affiliates recruited by other affiliates. Top-tier affiliate recruits sub-affiliates, creating affiliate network. Top-tier receives commission on direct referrals plus commission split from sub-affiliate revenue. This creates multi-level affiliate structure scaling affiliate recruitment. Example: Affiliate A recruits Affiliate B. Affiliate A generates $1,000 monthly revenue, Affiliate B generates $500 monthly revenue. With 30% top-tier split, Affiliate A earns: $1,000 (own referrals) + $150 (30% of B's $500) = $1,150 total monthly commission.

Benefits and Challenges

Benefits: scales affiliate recruitment leveraging top affiliates as recruiters, creates incentive for top affiliates to invest in building affiliate networks, accelerates affiliate base growth. Challenges: quality control becomes difficult—sub-affiliates may not meet standards of direct recruitment, commission splits can become complex and confusing, fraud risk increases (sub-affiliates less monitored than direct), affiliate competition may emerge where direct and sub-affiliate compete for same audience.

Managing Multi-Tier Programs

Set clear policies: which affiliates can recruit sub-affiliates? Often only top performers (gold tier) can recruit. Define maximum tiers: limit to 2-3 levels preventing pyramid-scheme perception. Establish commission split formulas clearly: if direct commission is 25%, top-tier split is 20%, sub-affiliate receives 5%. Communicate splits transparently to prevent misunderstandings. Require approval of sub-affiliates: maintain quality control by vetting sub-affiliates similar to direct recruitment. Provide onboarding support for sub-affiliates: even if recruited by other affiliate, new sub-affiliates need training. Track sub-affiliate performance separately to identify issues early. Many sub-affiliate programs underperform due to poor sub-affiliate quality. Manage carefully—recruitment incentives can create misaligned motivations if top affiliates prioritize recruiting over promoting. Healthy multi-tier programs contribute 10-20% of affiliate revenue. Some companies prefer flat affiliate structure avoiding multi-tier complexity.
